Bisi Bele Bhat is a Karnataka essential which is prepared in their day to day kitchen. This dish is a combination of rice, dal, assorted vegetables and a special masala mix. The taste of this dish goes high up with this freshly roasted and pounded masala. This masala is a combination of fragrant whole spices, chillies and some dals.

Bisi bele bhat can be defined as a hot lentil and rice-based dish with an aromatic tadka. This homely dish is an onion-garlic free which is quite filling and healthy. In this dish lentil, rice and veggies are cooked separately and then combined together to get one gooey like consistency
This dish will remind you of the north Indian vegetable khichri. But the bisi bele bhat masala mix makes the huge difference between the two. Also, North Indian khichri has moong dals which is cooked together with rice and veggies, whereas bisi bele bhat contains toor or tuvar or arhar dal

Preperations required
1- Make bisi bele bhat masala
2- Chop veggies
3- soak tamrind with jaggery in half cup of water
4- Cook rice and toor dal seperately

INGREDIENTS FOR Bisibele Bhat Masala
• Oil – 1 tsp
• Bedki chillies – 5-6
• Chana dal – 1 tbsp
• Split/dhuli urad dal – 1 tbsp
• Coriander seeds- 1 tbsp
• Jeera/cumin seeds – 1 tsp
• Cloves – 4-5
• Cinnamon/dalchini stick – 1-inch piece
• Methi dana/fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp
• Coconut thin slices – 3-4 (fresh or dried)


DIRECTION FOR MASALA

1- Heat oil in a pan and add chana and urad dal. Fry them and add chillies, coconut slices and other whole spices

2- Roast them until they become crisp and release the aroma. Switch off the flame and let them cool. Grind them to make a fine or coarse powder.

3- This masala will be added while making bisi bele bhat

INGREDIENTS FOR BISI BELE BHAT

• Cooked short grain rice – 1 bowl
• Cooked Toor/tuvar/arhar dal – 1 bowl
• Assorted veggies(peas, onion, drum sticks, cauliflower, beans, capcicum etc)
• Coconut oil or ghee Or any other oil – 1-2 tbsp
• Bisi bele bhat masala – 2 tbsp
• Tamrind – lemon sized ball (soaked in water)
• Jaggery/gur – a small piece (soaked in water)



DIRECTIONS FOR BISI BELE BHAT
1- H
eat coconut oil in a pan and add heeng, mustard seeds,  curry leaves and cumin seeds
When they splutter,  add all the chopped veggies
2- Cook the veggies for 2 minutes and add bisi bele bhat masala, tamrind and jaggery/gur water. Stir them well

3- Next,  add boiled dal and rice and mix well everything

INGREDIENTS FOR TEMPERING

• Coconut or any other oil or ghee – 2 tsp
• Heeng/Asofotida – 1 tsp
• Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
• Curry leaves – 5-6
• Cashew nuts – 5-6
• Thin slices of coconut – 5-6

Tempering/ Tadka

1- Heat coconut oil in a pan and add mustard seeds. When splutter add curry leaves, heeng, cashew nuts and coconut slices. Roast them for a while and pour over prepared bisi bele bhat
2- Serve bisi bele bhat with onion-tomato raita
