Lal Lobia Curry

Lal lobia or red lobia curry(also call rongi in Punjab ) is a popular curry eaten with roti or rice in Punjabi households. This legume is very healthy and fulfils the requirement of protein. This is generally cooked like other dals are cooked, with a tadka of onion, tomatoes, ginger and garlic.

It is recommended to soak this bean for 2-3 hrs and then boiled to perfection. You can make lobia chaat, lobia salad or rasedaar lobia curry with this healthy bean

INGREDIENTS FOR RED LOBIA CURRY
•  Red lobia (washed and soaked 2 hrs) – 1 cup/150 gms

•  Water – 5 cups

•  Salt – 2 tsp or to taste

•  Turmeric powder/haldi – 1 tsp


INGREDIENTS FOR TEMPERING/TADKA

•  Ghee – 1 tbsp

•  Finely chopped onions – 2 tbsp

•  Finely chopped tomatoes – 3 tbsp

•  Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp

•  Cumin seeds – 1 tsp

•  Asafoetida/heeng powder – 1 tsp

•  Red chilly powder – 1 tsp

•  Garam masala powder – 1 tsp

•  Coriander powder – 1 tsp

•  Fresh coriander leaves and green chilly for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

–  Add soaked lobia, water, salt and turmeric powder to the pressure cooker
2-  Close the lid and keep on high flame first for 5 minutes. After that reduce the flame and let it cook for 15 minutes or till 7-8 whistles come
3-  Let the cooker cool down completely and mix boiled lobia with the back of a ladle

4-  Time to prepare for Tempering. Take a tadka pan and add ghee. Add cumin seeds followed by heeng powder. Time to add chopped onions and ginger-garlic paste

5-  Cook onions until they change colour a little bit. Add all the powdered spices and cook for a while. Add chopped tomatoes and cook them until they get soft.

6-  Add this tadka to the boiled lobia and mix well. Close the cooker again and keep on flame for 5 more minutes at medium flame
7-  Switch off the flame and let the cooker cool down completely. Serve the yummy lobia curry with roti or rice
