MOONG DAL CHEELA/SAVOURY PANCAKES WITH MOONG DAL /मूंग दाल चीला

Moong dal cheela or pancake is substantial regarding health and quite easy to make with minimum ingredients. Dals/lentils are fondly consumed in India in one form or the other. We prepare a number of dishes with lentils from breakfast to main course and soups to desserts. This staple is widely cultivated in India with a number of variations. Whole or split, moong dal is protein-packed so one of the healthiest lentils.

To cook moong dal cheela or savoury pancake, dal is soaked and ground. This is fermented for a couple of hours to transform into a tasty and healthy breakfast. We commonly use fermentation technique in our cuisine because of its health benefits regarding our stomach and digestive system. Seasonal veggies of your choice can be added to increase taste and nutritive values

INGREDIENTS TO MAKE MOONG DAL CHEELA

•  Split moong dal – 1 cup
•  Water for soaking dal – 2 cups
•  Ginger – 1-inch piece
•  Finely chopped onions – 1 big
•  Tomatoes(sliced) – 2 nos
•  Green chillies – 2 nos or to taste
•  Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
•  Finely chopped coriander leaves
•  Salt – 1 tsp or to taste
•  Cooking oil or ghee – 4 tsp or as required

DIRECTIONS FOR MOONG DAL CHEELA

1- Firstly grind soaked moong dal with ginger and green chillies to a smooth paste. Add required water while grinding

2- Keep the dal paste for two hours so that it gets fermented slightly

3- Next, add salt, chopped onions and coriander leaves and mix well. Add sufficient water to get a pouring consistency

4- Heat a pan and add oil or ghee. Spread a ladleful of batter in the centre. Allow it to spread by itself. Place tomato slices on top and press them with a spatula. Add 1 tsp oil on top

5- When cooked from the bottom, flip it to cook the other side till it gets a golden colour

6- Make sure that moong dal cheela is cooked to perfection both sides

7- Serve the MOONG DAL CHEELA with green chutney or tomato ketchup

NOTES AND TIPS
*  If you don’t have sufficient time for fermentation, the baking soda can be added for instant preparation
