TOMATO RICE/HOW TO MAKE SOUTH INDIAN STYLE TOMATO RICE /THAKKALI SADAM RECIPE

Tomato rice is a blend of two main ingredients and some flavours from South India. This is a popular rice dish prepared in every home with simple ingredients. Though there is not any traditional recipe, yet each house follows it’s own to cook this yummy rice dish. The authentic recipe uses the tomatoes only but you can add other veggies as well like peas and carrots etc.

The TOMATO RICE dish can be prepared in two ways. One is when the soaked rice is cooked with some spices, aromatics and tomatoes in one pot and the other is with precooked rice as I have made. I boiled the rice first and gave a tadka or tempering of some aromatics, onion and pureed tomatoes. This rice dish is ideal with leftover rice from the previous meal. With leftover rice, it takes only 10 minutes to finish the dish. This is advised to prepare this type at least 1 hour before you serve it, meanwhile the rice will get enough time to absorb all the flavours. This rice dish goes well with plain curd or boondi ka raita

INGREDIENTS REQUIRED

•  Long grain rice  – 1cup /150 gms
•  water for boiling rice – 6 cups
•  Tomatoes – 4-5 nos
•  Finely chopped onions – 1 big
•  Finely chopped ginger – 1 tsp
•  Salt – 1 tsp + 1 tsp
•  Red chilly powder – 1 tsp
•  Crushed black pepper – 1 tsp
•  Whole cashew – 6-8 nos
•  Curry leaves – 8-10
•  Mustard seeds/rye – 1 tsp
•  Whole cumin/jeera – 1 tsp
•  Split urad dal – 1 tsp
•  Whole red chilly – 2 nos
•  Cooking oil – 1 tbsp +1 tsp

DIRECTIONS TO MAKE

1-  keep water for boiling and add salt and 1 tsp oil. Add washed rice and allow them to boil at medium-high flame until they are cooked to perfection. Strain them through a colander and keep aside

2-  Give a few cuts to the tomatoes and add to the boiling water for 5 minutes. Take them out and remove the skin when cooled. Chop and blend to the coarse puree. Keep aside

3-    Heat oil in a kadahi and add mustard seeds, cumin, whole red chilly, split urad dal, ginger and curry leaves. Allow everything to splatter

3-  Add chopped onions and cook them for a while. Time to add salt, red chilly powder and crushed pepper.

4- Now add tomato puree. Roast the onion-tomato masala until it leaves oil

5-  Time to add boiled rice. Mix everything well.

6- Flavoursome TOMATO RICE is ready. Keep it at rest to absorb all the flavours. Garnish with some roasted cashew nuts and curry leaves and Serve them in the main course with dals, raita or plain curd

NOTES

*  The tomato rice can be cooked in the pressure cooker as a one-pot dish

*  If you have some leftover rice, they are ideal to cook the delicious tomato rice dish

*  If you boil the rice separately for this dish like mine, You can blanch tomatoes in the same pot while boiling rice to make your cooking easier
