Chana Dal-Palak Curry/ Split Bengal Gram-Spinach Curry

Chana dal palak curry is a classic combination when we talk about our main course dal dishes. Though we cook separately both the ingredients to make yummy dishes but when we combine them to cook together, a yummy chana dal-palak curry comes out with magical flavours

This dish is very common in our household especially in North India. A Sindhi delicacy Sai Bhaji is very similar to this dal palak version. The difference is that they add some more veggies with palak.
For this chana dal-palak dish both the ingredients are cooked together to perfection and a flavourful tampering or tadka of onion, tomatoes, some aromatics and our favorite powered spices are added to cooked dal

INGREDIENTS

•  Chana dal /split bengal gram(soaked for 2 hrs)  – 1 cup/150 gms
•  Washed and Finely chopped Spinach /palak – 2 cups/300 gms
•  Water – 4 -5 cups(quantity of water depends of what consistency you want) 
•  Salt – 2 tsp/to taste
•  Turmeric /haldi powder – 1 tsp

INGREDIENTS FOR TEMPERING/TADKA

•  Ghee or oil – 2 tbsp
•  Finely chopped onions – 2 tbsp
•  Finely chopped tomatoes – 2 tbsp
•  Finely chopped ginger, garlic and green chilies – 1 tsp each
•  Cumin seeds/jeera – 1 tsp
•  Asofotida/heeng powder – 1 tsp
•  Carom/ajwain seeds – 1 tsp
•  Red chilly powder, coriander powder and garam masala powder – 1 tsp each

STEP BY STEP

1-  Take a pressure cooker and add chopped spinach, chana dal, water, salt and haldi powder. Cover the lid and cook for 10 minutes or 5-6 whistles come

2 – Switch off the gas and let the cooker cool down completely
3 – Open the lid and mix dal palak with a ladle to incorporate both. Whilest prepare for tadka.

TEMPERING/TADKA

–  Heat ghee in a tadka pan and add chopped onions, ginger, garlic and green chillies. Cook for a while

2-  Add jeera, heeng and ajwain and allow them to crackle

3-  Add coriander powder, red chilly powder and half of the garam masala(half quantity of garam masala will be added to finished dal palak)

4-  Stir for a while and add chopped tomatoes. Cook tomatoes until they get soft. Mash them with the back of the ladle

5-  pour this flavourful tadka over prepared chana dal palak dish. Mix tadka and remaining garam masala well to the dish to incorporate everything


7-  Serve yummy chana dal palak dish with roti or rice
