Many people now might not be aware of the fact that like plum and nuts cakes, Porriage has also been an important part of Christmas celebrations for a long time in many European countries.That time, it was a popular tradition to observe a period of feasting in the weeks leading to Christmas. As per tradition, a rich Porridge was prepared with oats or wheat with dry fruits, spices, honey and fresh fruits.This Porridge was eaten as Christmas Porridge.
.Rather than being a part of the Christmas celebration, this Wheat Porridge preparation can also be treated as a healthier breakfast dish for everyone having a sweet-tooth. The goodness of healthy ingredients would definitely make this dish a likeable choice
Not only in Europe but also in our country it has been an integral part of our breakfast for olden times.I too have tried to make this healthy Porridge by giving it a healthier twist. using jaggery, nuts and fresh Pears which have been Caramelized to make it relishable even by the kids.

Wheat Porridge With Caramelized Pear

Prepration time – 10 minutes
Cooking time – 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS FOR PORRIDGE-
:
Dalia/ broken wheat – 1 cup or 120 gms
Gur or jaggery – 100 gms or as per taste
Milk – 5 cups or 500 ml
Water – 1 cup or 100 ml
Ghee or olive oil – 1 tbsp
Cardamom powder – 1 Tsp
Chopped almonds – 1/4 cup
INGREDIENTS For Caramelized Pears -:
Pears – 4 nos.
Sugar – 1/2 cup or 60 gms
Water – 2 tbsp
Lemon juice – 1 tbsp or juice of 1 lemon
Cinemon powder – 1 Tsp
METHOD For Porriage-:
 
Heat ghee or oil in a pan
Roast Dalia / broken wheat in ghee until golden
Add milk, jaggery and water and bring to 1 boil
Add half of the chopped al.onds and cardamom powder and cover the pan.
Let the Porriage- boil at slow flame until all the milk is absorbed and dalia is cooked.
METHOD FOR CARAMELIZED PEARS -:
 
First of all peal the Pears and scoop out the seeds with a spoon
Add sugar and water to a non-stick pan
Slowly the sugar will start to boil.It will start bubbling and then start caramelizing.
Don’t stir it with a spoon, just move the pan in the circular motion with handle.
Be careful as the caramel is too hot.
Add lemon juice and cinemon powder and stir now.Add pears and let them cook in the caramel.
Cook both sides until the colour of the Pears change to golden brown.

TIME FOR PLATING -:

In a shallow dish pour some Porridge
Add 1 Caramelized pear over the Porridge-
Add some chopped almonds and serve hot
